Gate Valve

Isolation

Quarter-turn

Large bore

Purpose: A rotating disc controls flow, a quarter-turn valve suited to large diameters.

Non-return

Purpose: Permits flow in one direction only, preventing backflow.

Y-type strainer

Y-Strainer

Low flow

Purpose: Removes debris from water, steam and refrigerant lines.

Advantages: Compact, easy to install and clean, minimal pressure drop. Best for low-flow systems and tight spaces.

Fabricated basket strainer

Basket Strainer

High flow

Purpose: Filters larger particles and debris in high-flow systems.

Advantages: High dirt-holding capacity, less frequent maintenance. Best for larger systems with heavy debris load.

Globe Valve

Throttling

Purpose: Regulates flow; the fluid changes direction as it passes through the valve.

Note: Good for flow control and frequent operation.

Pressure Reducing Valve

Regulation

Purpose: Holds a set downstream pressure regardless of upstream variation.

Which one do you need?

The fastest way to narrow a specification is by what the valve has to do, not by what it is called.

You need full isolation and will not be throttling.

You need to regulate flow and operate it often.

Throttling duty

Ball

You need a fast, tight shut-off under pressure.

High-pressure isolation

Butterfly

The line is large bore and space or weight is tight.

Large diameter, high flow

Check

Reverse flow would damage a pump or compressor.

Backflow protection

Y-Strainer

Flow is modest and access is restricted.

Low flow, tight space

Basket Strainer

Flow is high and the debris load is heavy.
